Entertainment News: MTV and War of the Worlds

With reboots like Teen Wolf and continuation shows like Fuller House and Gilmore Girls, it is no surprise to see this happening, according to The Hollywood Reporter; MTV is going to do a television show dealing with H.G. Wells War of the Worlds (Goldberg, 2016).

War of the Worlds is a science fiction novel by the English author H.G. Wells (1866-1946). His first novel The Time Machine became an overnight sensation in 1895, along with other stories such as The Island of Doctor Moreau (1896), and The Invisible Man (1897), all became movies (Biography, 2016).

What is unique about War of the Worlds is that back in 1938 on Halloween night, Orson Welles (1915-1985) went on the radio with his version of the story that there’s an alien invasion happening in Grover’s Mill, New Jersey. This radio broadcast caused a nationwide panic (History, 2009).

The War of the Worlds story made it to the silver screen back in 1953. A television show in 1988, a continuation (sequel) to the 1953 movie, where the war resumed after the Martians woke up from their hibernated state (sorry, the bacteria on Earth did not kill them, just put them into dreamland).  The 1988 television show is also known as War of the Worlds: The Second Invasion. In 2005 we saw three versions of the movie, one starring Tom Cruise, which was in theaters, one starring C. Thomas Howell which was direct to video and another one starring Anthony Piana also to video.  In 2012 (2014 in the USA) The War of the Worlds took on a different format of that of animation, the title is called War of the Worlds: Goliath starring Adam Baldwin. It is a steampunk version set in the year of 1914, 15 years after the original invasion (IMDb, 2016).  In 2013, on Krypton Radio, Christopher H. Baum did his reimaging of the radio version of War of the Worlds. It is from NASA’s point of view (Krypton Radio, 2013). Now we see Jeff Davis and Andrew Cochran bringing War of the Worlds back in television series format on MTV.  If this does happen, it may come out in 2017 or 2018.

How do you feel about this reboot of this classic story?
