Happy Birthday, My Husband

Originally published at Coffee House Writers

In 2002,
You snuck into my life,
like a ninja in the night
with his eyes on the strive.

You found a break inside of me
and you float footed yourself
into my heart.

Over time,
you healed
my heart,
my hope,
and my soul.

Now, it is 2019,
and this Halloween
we will be married
for fifteen years.

But, it is March
and your birthday.
I do not have the money
to buy you any gifts.

All I have are words
to use in this bad poem
to say how much
you mean to me.

You have given me the freedom
to learn and grow.
You have stood by my side,
as others run and hide.

You believe me
and in me,
when others
see lies.

I cannot wait until the day
we can leave this place we live,
and move to the forest,
to our little cabin
built for two,
plus a few pets.

My love grows
stronger for you
every day.

I know,
in my heart,
we will hold hands,
in this life and the next.

Side by side,
not even death
will tear us apart.

Happy Birthday,
my love,
my life,
my husband,
for all eternity.
